- Deforestation in the Amazon has decreased
In 2023, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon decreased by 50%, reaching its lowest level since 2018. This is due to efforts to halt tree loss, including by the left-wing government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Lula has pledged to stop illegal land clearing in the Amazon by 2030.
- Deforestation has decreased in other countries
Indonesia reduced its primary forest loss by 64%, and Malaysia saw a 57% drop in deforestation.
- Papua New Guinea is creating a legal fund
This fund will allow indigenous and local communities to challenge and cancel illegally issued logging licenses.
Some other good news about deforestation includes:
- Deforestation in neighboring Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia has also decreased.
- Logging has decreased in key rainforest regions.
